In recent years, Australia’s tile market has undergone significant changes, with growing consumer demand for eco-friendly materials and personalised designs. As sustainable living gains traction, more Australians are opting for low-carbon tiles and products made from recycled materials to reduce environmental impact.
Local manufacturers and importers are increasingly offering low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) tiles and products made from recycled glass and ceramic waste. Major building retailers in Sydney and Melbourne report a 30%+ sales increase for such tiles over the past year.
Consumer preferences are shifting toward large-format tiles (e.g., 1200x2400mm) and wood- or stone-effect designs, which enhance spatial aesthetics while being easy to maintain. Additionally, matt finishes and anti-slip tiles are seeing strong demand for bathrooms and outdoor areas.
To cater to the premium market, some brands now provide custom patterns, colours, and finishes, allowing homeowners to create unique spaces. Advances in digital printing enable intricate designs and ultra-realistic textures.
A spokesperson from the Tile Council of Australia noted, “Buyers are no longer just price-driven—they prioritise durability, sustainability, and aesthetics. Next, we may see growth in smart tiles, such as those with temperature control or self-cleaning properties.”
